چکیده

Results are presented from a numerical study of transient growth experienced by infinitesimal perturbations to flow in an axisymmetric pipe with a sudden 1–2 diametral expansion. First, the downstream reattachment point of the steady laminar flow is accurately determined as a function of Reynolds number and it is established that the flow is linearly stable at least up to Re=1400. A direct method is used to calculate the optimal transient energy growth for specified time horizon !, Re up to 1200, and low-order azimuthal wavenumber m. The critical Re for the onset of growth with different m is determined. At each Re the maximum growth is found in azimuthal mode m=1 and this maximum is found to increase exponentially with Re. The time evolution of optimal perturbations is presented and shown to correspond to sinuous oscillations of the shear layer. Suboptimal perturbations are presented and discussed. Finally, direct numerical simulation in which the inflow is perturbed by Gaussian white noise confirms the presence of the structures determined by the transient growth analysis. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. #doi:10.1063/1.3313931$

Physical Modelling of Self-Aeration in a Cavitating Sudden PIPE Expansion Flow

Sudden pipe expansions have been known as efficient hydraulic energy dissipaters for a long time. The complex phenomenon of flow separation and velocity discontinuity at the interface of incoming jet and the recirculation flow, results in intensive shear and tensile rupture of the fluid and the associated destructive phenomenon of cavitation. This paper focuses on aeration in sudden pipe expans...

Numerical Analysis of Sediment Transport in Sewer Pipe

The efficiency and economical performance of sewer systems is an essential issue in urban drainage. The need for sewers to carry sediment has been recognized for many years. One of the main problems in designing sewerage systems is the sediment deposition. Sedimentation in sewers occurs regularly according to the alternating natural flow. The present study investigates the hydraulic characteris...

Unsteady MHD Flow of a Dusty Non- Newtonian Bingham Fluid Through a Circular Pipe

In this paper, the transient magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of a dusty incompressible electrically conducting non-Newtonian Bingham fluid through a circular pipe is studied taking the Hall effect into consideration. A constant pressure gradient in the axial direction and an uniform magnetic field directed perpendicular to the flow direction are applied. The particle-phase is assumed to behave a...

INVERSE FREQUENCY RESPONSE ANALYSIS FOR PIPELINES LEAK DETECTION USING THE PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION

Inverse Transient Analysis (ITA) is a powerful approach for leak detection of pipelines. When the pipe transient flow is analyzed in frequency domain the ITA is called Inverse Frequency Response Analysis (IFRA). To implement an IFRA for leak detection, a transient state is initiated in the pipe by fast closure of the downstream end valve. Then, the pressure time history at the valve location is...

Pressure Profile Estimation through CFD in UBD Operation Considering with Influx to Wellbore

Nowadays, UnderBalanced Drilling (UBD) technology is widely applicable in the petroleum industry due to its advantages to an overbalanced drilling operation. UBD success depends on maintaining the drilling fluid circulating pressure below the reservoir pore pressure during operations. One of the main prerequisites of a successful UBD operation is the correct estimation of the pressure profi...
